Detailed description of Lakewood Golf Club - Azalea (RTJGT)

Marriott's Grand Hotel & Lakewood Golf Club - is a Resort, 36 hole golf facility located in Point Clear, Alabama. The facility has two 18-hole golf courses, The Azalea Course and The Dogwood Course.

The Azalea Course first opened for play in 1948. The course was designed by Perry Maxwell. The course was redesigned in 1962 by Ron Garl. The course was redesigned / renovated in 2006 by Bobby Vaughan.

The Lakewood Golf Club at The Grand Hotel was built in 1947. The fairways are lined with 200-year old oaks and the signature hole - the par 5, 14th hole on the Azalea course - features an island green surrounded by a four-acre lake that demands an almost perfect approach shot.

The two, 18-hole courses are open to Lakewood members and hotel guests. Of the two, the Dogwood course is perhaps the most forgiving; the Azalea, with its hair-raising par5 14th, is the more challenging. Tee selection - there are mutiple choices on each course - will make or break your round.

Par for the course is 72. From the back tees the course plays to 6,770 yards. From the forward tees the course measures 5,307 yards. The longest hole on the course is # 1, a par-5 that plays to 580 yards. The shortest hole on the course is # 13, a par-3 that plays to 160 yards from the back tees.

Watch out for # 8, a 428 yard par-4 challenge and the #1 handicap hole on the course. The easiest hole is # 16, a 360 yard par-4.

Played this course twice in the last 3 weeks. A little pricey, but an excellent course. The resort and area is great. I drove 272 miles, so it must have an attraction.

Would travel: 120-300 Miles, Not Vacation Worthy
Bottom line: I would play again, Better than average course for the area

I have played these golf courses off and on for the last 40 or so years. They have always been both beautiful and thoroughly entertaining. The improvements in the Resort and the Golf Courses since Katrina a simply spectacular. I have always loved the place and I still do. Dave Clark, the General Manager and formerly the Director of Golf here, has a superb staff serving folks in a splendid setting.

Would travel: 0-10 Miles, Vacation Worthy
